UNIMAS Produces Intubation Boxes and Face Shields for Frontliners

Kota Samarahan, 1 April 2020 (SNN) : Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to produce health equipment for frontliners battling the COVID-19 disease.

Yesterday, UNIMAS inventors from the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD), Faculty of Built Environment (FBE), and Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology (FCSIT) delivered two self-manufactured intubation boxes and 100 custom-made face shields to the Sarawak Government Hospital (SGH).

The intubation box is a transparent cube that covers a patient’s head during endotracheal intubation, a necessary procedure for COVID-19 patients who suffer from respiratory failure. The use of an intubation box provides additional protection for our healthcare troop during this invasive procedure.

According to Dr Charles Bong Hin Joo, the project leader for the intubation box, the intubation box created by his team is customised so that it has sliding doors on both sides for easy tube insertions.

The intubation box team comprises En Mohd Sapian Mohd Kassim, En Saiful Edi, En Mohd Zaidi bin Serah, En Mohd Amirul Nizam, and En Mohd Hafiz bin Mafadi. Meanwhile, the face shields were produced by the teams of Dr Lee Nung Kion, En Ahmad Sofian Shminan, and En Iswandy Jamaludin (FCSHD); Prof Dr Akmal Goh, Dr Iziq Eafifi Ismail, En Irwandy bin An, and En Mohd Tajuddin Unus (FBE); and Dr Sze San Nah, Dr Lau Sei Ping, and Mr Lee Jun Choi (FSCIT).

The equipment was handed over to SGH representatives by YBhg Prof Dr Wan Hashim, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research & Innovation, UNIMAS. Present at the ceremony were Prof Dr Lo May Chiun (Senior Director of the Research Innovation & Enterprise Centre), Prof Dr Asri Said (Dean of FMHS) and Prof Akmal Goh (Dean of FBE).

SGH expressed their appreciation for the useful contribution and has requested for an additional 100 face shields and nine intubation boxes from UNIMAS. These will be delivered this coming Friday. Apart from the hospital, UNIMAS has also received requests for face shields and hand sanitisers from other frontliners, including from the prison department.

Earlier, researchers from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST) formulated hand sanitisers after discovering that hand sanitisers were in short supply. The hand sanitisers were delivered to the Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) UNIMAS, the UNIMAS Health Centre (PKU), the UNIMAS residential colleges, and the Kota Samarahan Royal Malaysian Police.

The 100 custom-made face shields were presented to SGH representatives
