MIRI (June 6): In efforts to strengthen economic growth in the state’s northern border regions, Sarawak is sending a delegation to Eastern Europe next week to study successful cross border development models.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang states that the aim of the visit to take a closer look at how neighbouring countries have optimised border locations to drive trade, tourism and joint economic development.

“Next week, I will be leading a delegation to Eastern Europe to study how neighbouring countries develop their cross-border economies where they have achieved success in cross-border trade, join border development and tourism,” he announced, at the officiation of the Babulang Festival and Lumba Kerbau 2026 cultural night in Batu Danau on Friday.

Awang Tengah believes that the geographical position of Sarawak, presents significant opportunities for cross-border economic expansion as it borders Brunei Darussalam, Kalimantan (Indonesia), Sabah and Labuan.

“Sarawak, Limbang especially, hosts many festivals and has cultural tourism. We also have strength and significant potential in eco-tourism strengths, including in terms of logistics development and the requirements to expand into e-commerce,” says Awang Tengah.

He added that these strengths result in Limbang and Lawas being well-positioned to benefit from greater cross-border economic integration, especially with the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

He says the Babulang Festival serves as an important platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Bisaya community.
“The buffalo race isn’t merely a form of entertainment or competition, but showcases the customs, values and traditions that have been passed down through generations”

Awang Tengah has also urged the Bisaya community to continue preserving their cultural heritage, including their traditional attired, food, language, customs and games which reflect the community’s individuality.

He also states that Sarawak’s political stability has enabled the state government to pursue long-term plans in development and effective resource management to boost the economy.
“With this stability, the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Open has successfully propelled the state forward across various sectors,” says Awang Tengah.
