KUCHING (JUNE 13): Sarawak will continue to press ahead with its pursuit of rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) regardless of political developments at the federal level, said Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
The Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) stressed that the state’s efforts to reclaim its rights would not be affected by any change in federal leadership amid speculation of a possible early general election.
“MA63 negotiations will continue regardless of who forms the federal government.
“This is a struggle to restore our rights, and we will continue pursuing it whether there is an election or not,” she said when met by reporters after opening Pesta Samariang 2026 at Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar here on Saturday.
She further explained that the process of implementing and resolving matters related to MA63 would take time, but assured that the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to the cause.
“This is an ongoing effort to reclaim our rights, and that struggle is far from over,” she said.
“It may take time, but as long as the GPS government remains in place, we will continue to fight for MA63.”
On another matter, Sharifah Hasidah said discussions on introducing legislation relating to waqf are still at an early stage, while acknowledging the need for a proper legal framework to facilitate waqf matters in the state.
She added that such legislation would help streamline the process for individuals wishing to endow land, property or other assets, while ensuring that their intentions are properly fulfilled.
“Islamic legislation relating to waqf should be established properly so that the process becomes easier and whatever is intended to be endowed can be carried out smoothly and effectively,” she noted.
Meanwhile, Sharifah Hasidah said there has been no new development regarding the proposed 17 additional seats in Sarawak.
“We are still waiting, and we hope that the creation of the 17 new seats can be expedited,” she said. SOURCE: BorneoPost
