PM: Bintulu Port transfer to Sarawak reflects Putrajaya’s commitment to upholding Federal Constitution, MA63

BINTULU (June 21): The transfer of Bintulu Port to the Sarawak government is a historic milestone that reflects Putrajaya’s commitment to upholding the Federal Constitution and the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim

He said the handover was among the key priorities discussed with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg shortly after he assumed office as prime minister.

He said the federal government had worked closely with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and the Sarawak government to expedite the process.

The federal and Sarawak governments had earlier agreed in principle on a valuation of RM1.8 billion for the state’s acquisition of Bintulu Port.

“Today is historic. Since I first served in government, I have never witnessed such a process. This is a major achievement because it fulfils what we had promised to respect the Federal Constitution and uphold the spirit of MA63,” he said during the transfer ceremony at Menara Kidurong, Bintulu Port Authority here.

Acknowledging concerns raised by certain quarters in both Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia regarding MA63-related negotiations, Anwar stressed that discussions between Putrajaya and Kuching had always been conducted in a spirit of mutual trust and understanding.

“There has never been any threat from Sarawak. What exists are discussions, views and negotiations to safeguard the interests of Sarawakians within the Malaysia federation,” he said.

Anwar also revealed that negotiations involving national oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Sarawak’s oil and gas company Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) are nearing completion.

He said several fundamental principles have already been agreed upon by both governments and expressed hope that a final agreement would be concluded soon.

The prime minister commended Sarawak’s rapid economic transformation, describing the state as an emerging industrial giant in the region.

“Sarawak is no longer merely developing. In several industrial sectors, it has become a giant in this region. Malaysians should be proud of Sarawak’s achievements and potential,” he added.
